Week Nine – Chocolate Eclairs

Patisserie week. Basically a week for gentle and precise baking aka not my week. Honestly watching the bake off this week I really did question why I was baking along with the show. I don’t know why but it made me slightly mad that they were impossible tasks. I mean not impossible, but for a home baker going out each week to buy ingredients isn’t cheap and everything this week appeared as though it was going to cost me an arm to go and collect the ingredients.

Let’s just hope the final isn’t an expensive bake shall we….

The challenge.

As you can probably tell (from my rant above) I was a bit stuck with what to make this week as I didn’t want to spend a lot. I was going to make the cake then I saw how many eggs it used up and I thought better of my decision. So I opted for chocolate eclairs, because the only thing I had to buy was the cream.

I followed Paul’s recipe from BBC FOOD. I found the recipe easy enough to follow, however I have made choux pastry before and did it different to this one so wasn’t 100% comfortable with this method.

I also found it really hard to pipe a nice thick line in one go. I ended up re-pipping on the line to fill it up and this made them a bit bumpy shall we say.

Whilst they tasted great, my sister thought it was a great time to share my own instagram image with me to say they didn’t look great…so lets just say there is room for improvement.

I would make these again as they were simple and effective, however I will have to work on my pipping skills a bit more I think rather than avoiding it altogether!

Did you bake along this week? What did you make?

Until the next time,

George x

Here are some pictures of the end result…

  1. Its always great to challenge yourself George and I think you have done brilliantly. Ok so they need a little visual improvement but that’s just practice and you’re always making new things so it’s difficult to practice the same recipe over and over. What a great recipe to have to practice though… i bet these are yummy! Well done!

Thanks my lovely – I was told they tasted amazing even if the pipping does need work! Will have to practice before Christmas I think! x

  2. Mmm I love chocolate éclairs and I think they look quite ok, when you buy them at a bakery there are no two éclairs that look exactly the same either.. They look yummy enough to eat so that’s what’s most important anyway!
